Designing and Leading Change
School improvement implicitly mandates change. Skillful observation of patterns of high performance and study of the principles of change derived from these patterns build leaders’ capacity to design and lead positive change in schools and school systems.
In this session, participants will:
-Identify recurrent patterns which support or obstruct change
-Examine useful tools and processes for supporting improvement
-Apply processes to individual change efforts. |

Reading and Shaping School Culture
Each and every school comes equipped with a strong, existing culture. This invisible, but powerful force, is perhaps, the primary determiner of success for a school’s improvement efforts. It is the leader’s ability to understand, assess and positively shape this intangible, but all powerful force, that either fuels, or freezes a school’s improvement efforts...school culture.
In this session, participants will:
Identify, understand and appreciate the existing school culture
Analyze an assess the leverage points within the culture
Create a plan for positively shaping school culture |

Developing Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals
Individuals and groups that have committed to a clear, compelling direction are characterized by energy, grace, focus and persistence, and teamwork and collaboration. The process of developing a shared mission and vision can be a powerful experience, the remembrance of which energizes and aligns the behavior of the members of the group.
In this session participants will:
Examine personal mission, vision and core values
Evaluate processes for creating a shared mission, vision and core values
Examine the benefits and pitfalls in goal setting |

Coaching and Mentoring for Teacher Performance Improvement
The manner in which school leaders provide performance feedback sends strong, culture shaping messages about the school’s (and our own) values and beliefs about teacher performance.
In this session participants will:
Examine one’s personal role (whether teacher leader or administrator) in coaching and mentoring.
Examine appropriate coaching models to use with teachers performing at various points on the efficacy continuum.
Practice using the coaching tools and models |

Finding Your Personal Leadership Style
The foundational prerequisite for all leadership effectiveness is self knowledge. It seems that leaders who first take the time to understand themselves are better able to understand others and lead them effectively.
In this session participants will:
construct a Personal Leadership Platform, a self knowledge tool which organizes a leader’s personal values, mission, style, personality and experiences into a cogent expression of self that provides a foundation upon which leaders can build. |

Six Big Ideas...The Essential Elements of Instructional Leadership
Over the past 100 years of educational research, data analysis, and professional development, a specific set of teacher behaviors have been identified as closely linked to improved student achievement. While great teachers apply strategies above and beyond these basic six, the link to student achievement for these six core skills, has become more and more apparent especially for reading and math instruction and particularly for students at or below grade level.
In this session participants will:Examine the six big ideas as the essential elements of instruction
Evaluate the “health” of these standards of practice in their own school situations. |

Program Accountability and Effect Size
“Best of Class” schools/districts regularly measure the effect size of school programs, investing more in those that produce large, positive results and redeploying human and material resources from programs with a negative (or even a small positive) effect size.
This program provides insights and strategies for school leaders to:
-Understand the nature of school “programs.”
-Understand the concept of “effect size” as it relates to accountability for results in school programs.
Identify and apply strategies for measuring program effect size.
-Identify and eliminate barriers to program accountability
-Improve the results of school programs by redeploying human and material resources from low effect size programs.
-Create cultures that support rapid, “fast to market” program innovations and changes that keep effect sizes large and positive. |

Leading High Performance Teams
The knowledge base and skill set required to provide effective leadership for team based organizations is quite different from those required in other work designs. Successful leadership for teams requires great versatility; the leader’s skills and behavior must vary with the maturity and readiness of the team. New teams require one type of leadership skill set; mature teams another.
In this session, participants will:
Examine principles of effective leadership for creating, supporting and sustaining high performing team based work designs. |
